The city of Rogers can move ahead with a 10.5 acre purchase for $201,662 on Bellview Road if the City Council approves at its next meeting.
"This is one of the last remaining pieces of parcel that are here in Rogers for the Razorback Greenway Trail," said Steve Glass, director of planning and transportation.
The Razorback Greenway Trail is designed to connect Fayetteville to Bella Vista and the city wants to buy the land to connect a missing link in Rogers.
"This will connect it on through and there's another two pieces that are under construction,” Glass said. “If those are finished, then you'll be able to go from the North end of Rogers to the South."
The city will be reimbursed by a federal grant managed by the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission.
"The way it works is the land is being purchased by the different cities involved and we get reimbursed from the grant itself," Glass said.
The ten acres are located in front of a golf course where there's a sign announcing the end of the trail. The goal is to extend the trail under the bridge on Bellview Road and to the land the city wants to purchase.
“It would be awesome, we can take our kids on bike rides," Jenny Baker said. She was training with her two friends for a half marathon.
Baker said this trail expansion will help them avoid heavy traffic on Bellview Road.
"I think that would be great idea," Baker said. "This is very dangerous for people who are walking and running and even bikers."
Glass said the trail system improves the quality of life in the city and the region.
"It's recreation, but it's also meant to be an alternative form of transportation for the people who want to commute back and forth they can use this as well," Glass said.
Construction will start in the next few months, if the city council gives the stamp of approval in Tuesday’s meeting. The Rogers City Council meeting starts at 6:30 p.m..
The entire Razorback Regional Greenway Trail is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
