Police arrested a Fayetteville man they say broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house after she tried to end the affair.

Edward J. Rodriquez, 32, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of residential burglary. He was released Monday from the Washington County Detention Center on $7,000 bond, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

A woman told police she had been having an affair with Rodriquez before breaking the relationship off Sunday. Rodriquez came to her home and repeatedly banged on the door and rang the doorbell, she told Fayetteville police.

The woman said she was scared and believed Rodriquez was there to hurt her. She retreated to the bathroom with her four children and locked the door, placing her children in the bathtub, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

Rodriquez broke into the house through the back window, pulling out the screen and breaking the window pane, the preliminary report states. The suspect then broke open the bathroom door to get to the woman and her children, according to the report.

Officers then arrived on scene, summoned by the woman’s call to 911.

Rodriquez told police he broke into the home because he was concerned for the safety of the woman and her children after receiving no answer at the door.
