The Benton County Bomb Squad detonated what authorities initially thought was a pipe bomb, but later said was a military grade signal flare, east of Siloam Springs Monday afternoon (March 11).

Crews found the device in a wooded area near the intersection of Arkansas Highway 412 and Old Highway 68 near Siloam Springs, Sheriff Kelley Cradduck told 5NEWS.

Deputies told those near the scene to step back moments before an explosion was heard about 4 p.m.
