An early morning fire destroyed an unoccupied gas station in southern Washington County Monday (March 11), said Dennis Ledbetter, Washington County fire marshal.

The old gas station in Evansville on South Highway 52 caught fire before 2 a.m, Ledbetter said. The cause of the fire was undetermined and still under investigation early Monday. Ledbetter said the cause of the fire does not look suspicious.

The building was being used as a storage facility and as a workshop for vehicles, he said.

Someone was last in the building at 5 p.m. Sunday working on a car, Ledbetter said.

Crews will be out later Monday to assess the damage and determine a cause, he said.
