A master plan that would bring major construction changes to Wedington Drive was approved Tuesday night by the Fayetteville City Council.

The council voted unanimously to support a master plan that developers said would alleviate traffic and increase pedestrian safety along the stretch of road that has become a major population point in the city in recent years.

About 25 percent of Fayetteville’s population resides along Wedington Drive, according to city officials.

The plan re-imagines Wedington as a parkway, with more green spaces and a business-friendly atmosphere. A major proposition of the plan is a roundabout that would replace traffic lights on the west side of the road’s intersection with Interstate 540. The plan also proposes “jug handle” turns onto the interstate, so vehicles would not be forced to turn left against traffic to get onto the interstate.

Designers and city officials have been working on the final portions of the plan for several months. The city hosted public input sessions late last year.
