A rally supporting gay and lesbian couples' rights to marriage was held in Fayetteville Tuesday evening (March 26).

Supporters on both sides of the debate took a strong stance. The Northwest Arkansas Center for Equality held the rally at the corner of College Avenue and Dickson Street.

"It has really opened up to a lot of healthy discussion about the topic, which is good,” said James Rector, with the center. “It's something that needs to happen in this country."

At the same time in Little Rock legislators are voting on a measure that affirms marriage is between a man and a woman.

"The Supreme Court is about to hear this issue and sometimes with a resolution, there's certainly not a law,” said Sen. Bart Hester, R-Cave Springs. “It's just saying ‘Hey, we, as representatives of the state of Arkansas, say that the state feels this way."

The resolution is by Rep. Jim Dotson, R-Bentonville.

Sen. Hester doesn't think the political climate in Arkansas favors same-sex marriage.

“I believe that the state of Arkansas as a whole, overwhelmingly, especially Benton County that I represent, would define marriage between a man and a woman."

The NWA Center for Equality held the rally while the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on Proposition 8 and they believe their demonstration makes a difference.

“I look at both in quantity and quality,” Rector said. “Quality is that we're providing a positive image for those in support of marriage equality and then in quantity is reaching those individuals who don’t know that this type of support exist in this area."

Both sides of this divisive issue are standing by their beliefs.

"I believe that we should have the same civil rights as everyone else," Rector said.

Meanwhile, Dotson's marriage resolution is up for a vote in the legislation this week.

“You can't go back in the history of the world and find any civilization or any other country that defined in any other way," Hester said.
