A Fayetteville man faces a felony charge after police said he kicked a purse that struck his 1-year-old daughter in the head.

Dontrell Barker, 22, was booked in the Washington County Detention Center on Saturday afternoon and has not had a bond amount set, according to the Sheriff’s Department website. Barker faces a felony charge of second-degree domestic battery, according to the website.

A preliminary police report said Fayetteville police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call Saturday morning on the 4000 block of East Huntsville Road. A woman said her boyfriend, identified as Barker, had shoved her and broken items in the couple’s home but had left, the report said.

Officers responded to the same location about 30 minutes later when Barker returned home and the argument resumed, the report said. Officers were told Barker had kicked a leather purse that, with contents, weighed approximately 5 pounds and was covered with studs, and the purse had struck the couple’s 1-year-old daughter in the forehead, the report said.

The report said the girl had a puncture wound on her forehead and, while officers were on the scene, she developed swelling the size of “an half-dollar.” Barker told officers the injury was an accident after the purse became “caught on his foot” when he was trying to step away from his girlfriend during an argument, the report said.
