A 14-year-old Tennessee boy was arrested on suspicion of first degree murder and aggravated arson after admitting to starting a fire that killed his mother Friday (April 5).

The teen told investigators he set the fire after an earlier disagreement with his mother, according to a report from our sister station WREG in Memphis.

Gwendolyn Wallace, 45, was killed in the fire in Shelby County Friday morning.

“One of the firefighting teams had located her in another part of the upstairs and tried to move her towards an escape point, but with the absence of the stairs that became impossible and it appears she had already succumb at that point,” said Brent Perkins from the Shelby County Fire Department told WREG.

No one else was home when the flames broke out.
