A Springdale man was hospitalized Monday after authorities said he lit himself on fire.

The man called 911, threatening to set himself and the apartment complex on fire, Lt. Derek Hudson said. The dispatcher then heard what sounded like a fire alarm in the background. A few seconds later, someone came on the phone and said the fire was out, according to the Springdale Police Department.

Springdale police and fire department responded to the scene. An ambulance transported the man from the J and B apartment complex at 3208 S. Thompson St. to Northwest Medical Center in Springdale, where his condition is unknown.

Investigators Monday evening were attempting to determine if the fire in the second-story unit was set intentionally.

"There isn't a lot of damage in the apartment," Hudson said. "There is a couch and clothes that are burned up but that's all we know at this point. We don't know if he did it on purpose or if it was an accident."

The man has burn injuries and police are waiting to interview him, authorities said.
