Flooding forced golf courses and businesses to close in Bella Vista Thursday (April 18).

“I got here at 5:30 this morning, water was about four inches deep in the whole dry cleaning shop running out the front door," said Wayne Phillips owns Village Dry Cleaners in the Cunningham Corner Shopping Center.

Phillips says the running water created a mess for neighboring businesses as well.

Damage from flooding wasn't limited to indoor businesses. Darryl Muldoon is the assistant golf pro at Bella Vista Country Club.

“This is the only river that runs north and it runs through our holes, about six holes,” he said. “So it caught all the rain from south as well as the rain we had here so the river has risen over six foot. Busted out everywhere. It’s gone over bridges starting to rip up the golf course."

It’s too early to accurately assess the damage but country club members won't be hitting the links tomorrow.

"I’ve got stumps everywhere, trees on gold courses, on holes,” Muldoon said. “We’re just hoping once it subsides that we'll be able to get back to play pretty quick."

Running water wreaking havoc on Bella Vista businesses isn't new. It happened at the golf course two years ago and Phillips has seen this every few years.

"I've been here 23 years, had the dry cleaners 23 years and this is about the 8th or 10th time that I’ve flooded out," he said.

Village Dry Cleaners was open for business Thursday, but some of the other businesses in the shopping center had to close.
