This year the public ceremony was moved inside the First United Methodist Church at the corner of 5th St. and Robinson.
Gov. Mary Fallin was among those attending and paid tribute to those who were lost in the bombing.
“It’s hard to believe that it’s been 18 years since the Oklahoma City bombing and how our lives, our state and frankly our nation has changed,” she said. “It’s hard to imagine something like this could have ever happened on American soil, much less Oklahoma soil.”
During the April 19, 1995 bombing, 168 people were killed.
“I once heard it said that ‘death breaks a heart, but love leaves a memory that no one can take,’ and what is left here in Oklahoma City is the love, the compassion, the memory and I don’t think that anyone can ever take away the response we saw in our great city, in our great state,” Fallin said.
The governor also honored the victims of Monday's bombing at the Boston Marathon. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon will be held on April 28. Memorial, race and city officials have been closely monitoring the events surrounding the Boston Marathon bombing.
Hundreds of officers from multiple jurisdictions, including bomb technicians, provide security for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon every year, according to Oklahoma City Police.
The event is expected to continue as scheduled.
About 24,000 runners are expected.
