A Springdale man faces aggravated assault and domestic battery charges after his girlfriend told police he hit her in the mouth and choked her Saturday morning.

Maxwell Montgomery, 21, was booked in the Washington County Detention Center on Saturday evening and has not had a bond amount set, according to the Sheriff’s Department website. Montgomery faces a felony charge of aggravated assault against a family or household member and misdemeanor charges of third-degree domestic battery, interference with emergency communications and for violating a no-contact order.

Montgomery was previously arrested on domestic battery charges in January, July and December of 2012.

A preliminary police report said Springdale police responded to a disturbance call from Candace Ligi on the 1700 block of South End Street. Ligi told officers her daughter, Samantha, had told her on the phone that her boyfriend had beaten her up, the report said.

Candace Ligi told police while she was speaking with her daughter, she heard the boyfriend, identified as Montgomery, telling Samantha Ligi to tell her mother everything was fine, the report said. Montgomery had been arrested in December 2012 when Samantha Ligi told police he had backhanded and choked her before biting her lip.

When the officer spoke with Montgomery, police were advised he had a no-contact order to stay away from Samantha Ligi and two additional warrants, the report said. Samantha Ligi told police that Montgomery had struck her in the face with his hand during an argument, and officers said Ligi had “obvious swelling” under her right eye, the report said.

Ligi told officers Montgomery left, but he returned and another argument began, the report said. Ligi said Montgomery began to choke her until she couldn’t breathe before he took her phone and keys and left to get cigarettes, the report said.

Ligi said Montgomery told her if she called police or neighbors he would “[expletive] her up,” the report said.
