The Sebastian County Humane Society will soon be looking for homes for 65 dogs that were brought in Monday (April 22).

Two vans full of Golden Doodles and Schnauzers were rescued from a puppy mill in Scott County.

JoAnn Barton says they started getting complaints about the dog operation about a year ago and since then the owner had become unable to care for the dogs.

Barton posted an update on the Sebastian County Humane Society’s Facebook page Wednesday evening.

“We have had more requests for Golden Doodles than we can ever fill. The breeder had mostly Schnauzers and that is what we will have primarily up for adoption,” she said.

Two of the adult Golden Retrievers have gone to rescue groups, Barton said on the groups Facebook page. Barton said some of the Golden Doodle puppies were sick and were sent to rescue to get immediate vet care.

Barton said the rest of the dogs will go up for foster care sometime next week after the dogs are treated for an illness. The shelter is now taking applications for foster families.

“There are 65 dogs in a better place today than they were yesterday and in the very near future we will have them in their forever homes,” Barton said.

Barton said a local company stepped up to help make this rescue possible.

“Fortunately funding from Pet Smart Charitable Foundation is sending us $20,000 worth of supplies to take care of these animals,” she said. “We couldn't have done it without their help.”

Barton says puppy mills are a growing problem statewide and she thinks Arkansas needs better state laws to deal with the problem.
