Battle of Highway 62 Heats up on the Baseball Field

Prairie Grove and Farmington have had a few epic battles on the ball field this baseball season.

The rivalry between Prairie Grove and Farmington, also known as the Battle of Highway 62, is one of the most intense high school rivalries in the state.

"It's just the biggest around," said Farmington senior shortstop Spencer Boudrey.  "You can't beat the atmosphere that we always have when we play them.  It's just a great time."

"It's big," said Prairie Grove Head Coach Mitch Cameron.  "It doesn't matter if one team is really good, really bad or equal.  It's going to be a dog fight."

This year on the baseball field the rivalry has heated up. The team's have battled back and fourth all season long.  The two teams are currently the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state.  Farmington won the regular season match-up and Prairie Grove won the conference tournament.

While the rivalry is incredible both coaches realize they need to focus on themselves in order to win.

"We can't worry about Prairie Grove, we have to worry about Farmington," said Farmington Head Coach Jay Harper.  "We are looking forward to playing them again if we have the chance."

"We have to focus on things we can control," said Cameron. "We can't worry about anything else.  We have to execute."

The two teams could face each other two more times this season.  Once in the regional tournament and once in the state tournament. Both teams have the same goal of capturing a state title.

"We want to go out there and do the best we can and of course win a state championship," said Boudrey.

"A state championship would be nice," said Prairie Grove senior shortstop Aaron Kincaid.  "We have been saying that for the past four years.  It would be nice to get one."

Only one team can be named state champion, so I guess we will have to wait and see how this storied rivalry plays out.
