Heavy snow and strong winds created almost blizzard like conditions in Benton County Friday (May 3).

“This is history this morning,” said Jack Brown, Benton County Road Department Superintendent.

The snow moved into Siloam Springs early in the morning leaving a blanket of snow across the area, a shock for many in the month of May.

“This is really the first time I've ever seen it snow in the month of May. Last year we had nice weather, last week we had nice weather but now we have snow,” said Marla Martin, Siloam Springs resident.

Crews with the Benton County Road Department were out spraying roads with sand as bridges and overpasses became slick.

A bigger issue crews faced was broken tree limbs.

“The big thing is the trees the limbs are coated heavy with snow and we got limbs that are heavy real low and also heavy limbs that are breaking off in the roads,” said ">

First Friday celebrations at the Bentonville Square were cancelled, the first time since 2008 that the event has been cancelled.

“Well today's theme was Art and Nature and obviously nature won today,” said Daniel Hintz, Downtown Bentonville Inc., Executive director.

Arkansas State Police worked about a half dozen weather related car accidents on I-540 in Northwest Arkansas.

The interstate was clear by 9 a.m.
