Southside Caps Perfect Conference Season

Lady Rebels beat rival Northside, 3-1, to finish off perfect 7A/6A-Central schedule.

The Southside softball program was far from the top of the mountain just a few, short years ago.

After Tuesday's 3-1 win against Northside, they can now call themselves perfect. At least as far as the 7A/6A-Central is concerned.

"Something we set out at the beginning of the season was to win a conference title and they worked really hard and they got it done," Southside coach Cassy Story said. "It was a big accomplishment for the team and for Southside High School."

The Lady Rebels built an early lead and was then able to hold off the Lady Bears to finish off the 14-0 league mark.

"Honestly it means the world to me," senior Kylie Ballard said. "I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to play with or a better season."

"It means the world to me," senior Tamara Unger said. "My senior year, I wanted to do it for my team and I'm glad we got it done."

"A conference championship means a lot," senior Ciara Sweetney said. "It’s our senior year and we’ve never done it before since I’ve been here so I’m happy."

Southside earned a bye in the opening round of the 7A state tournament but they'll carry an impressive 24-4 record into the second round.

"Hopefully we’re going to play our best," Story said. "Take it one game at a time so we’ll start on Friday whoever we end up playing and go out, play hard and do what we have to do to hopefully get the job done."

Southside is in a coin flip situation for seeding with Bryant due to the points system. The 7A state tournament begins on Thursday at Springdale High School with the finals being held on May 18 at the University of Arkansas' Bogle Park.
