Gene George Elementary in Springdale will soon have an 800 square foot health clinic built on the campus.

One million dollars in state money is going toward building clinics across Arkansas.

The clinic will be convenient for working parents who can`t leave their job to take their child to a doctor, said Annette Freeman, Gene George Elementary Principal.

“To know that they can come here when their child is sick and come here and meet us and go right to the doctor right down the hall and get their child seen right away without having to wait, I think that adds another level of comfort,” said Freeman.

Earlier this year, Parson Hills and Elmdale Elementary schools in Springdale were also selected.

Harvey Jones elementary has had a clinic for the last year.

Health center officials there say they see children from Gene George elementary and the new clinic will help lighten their load.

School nurse Amy Schultz sees about 20 students a day in her office but this new center will have more staff and two exam rooms.

It will also have a counseling center.

“Children maybe with ADHD, behavioral problems, autism, special education students, they can be seen by the counselor,” said Schultz.

Twenty-one schools will each receive $150,000 during the first year of the five year grant.

Construction at the three Springdale schools will begin at the end of this month. The clinics are scheduled to open in January of 2014.

Siloam Springs Intermediate school also will receive grant money to build a clinic.

Clinics also are scheduled to be built at schools in Cedarville and Waldron.
