This weekend 12 high school teams from the 5NEWS viewing area are playing for a State Championship at the University of Arkansas. No one deserves their spot in the title game more than Rogers softball.

Saturday afternoon the Lady Mounties went into their semifinal game against Southside with not a lot of people expecting them to win. Southside was a number one seed, cruising through the 7A Central undefeated and hadn't been tested at all this year. However, Saturday’s result shocked the 7A softball world, a 6-3 win for Rogers.

“We played our best this weekend,” said sophomore pitcher Haylee Zimmerman. “The fact that we're header there hasn't sunk in yet. I think when we walk in to the park Saturday it'll just hit us.”

Rogers went into the tournament as the second seed from the 7A West. They had a bye in the first round Thursday and beat Conway 2-0 in the quarterfinals Friday before the upset of Southside Saturday. The Mounties will play for the State Championship against North Little Rock at 3:00pm at the University of Arkansas’ Bogle Park.

“It's awesome,” said junior short stop Chandler Little. “It was our first day back at school today after we got in this weekend and the baseball boys are in too. So it's cool being together with them.”

The Rogers baseball team also advanced to the State Championship over the weekend, by beating their final two opponents 21-2. The Mounties baseball team plays Fayetteville at 2:00 pm Friday at Baum Stadium.
