The Northwest Arkansas Community College graduated a record number of students Sunday (May 19) at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers.

Hundreds of loved ones cheered for about 1,500 graduates as they walked the stage to receive their associate degree.

Retiring NWACC President Becky Paneitz was the featured speaker at the commencement ceremony.

Community leader Melba Shewmaker received an honorary associate degree. She was recognized for her love for education and the support she had given the college through the years.

"It's quite special,” Shewmaker said. “I have a deep appreciation for the college and the people that are involved from the administration to teachers and to think that they want to honor me, I can't help but to be happy with it."

NWACC officials said this year's class surpassed 2012 by approximately 300 graduates.
