Volunteers honored fallen veterans by placing small American flags on each grave Saturday (May 25) at the Fayetteville National Cemetery.
The flags are in place in preparation for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony set for 10 a.m. Monday.
Gloria Bailey, director of the Fayetteville National Cemetery, said about 8,000 flags were placed in the cemetery. She said she appreciated the turnout and the respect that comes with it.
"Just to have the children being patriotic and learning about how they have this freedom," Bailey said. "It's not free, people think it's free but those people have given their lives for the freedom that we have today."
The keynote speaker will be retired Lt. Colonel Ron Butler. This year's event will be on the lower circle of the cemetery and parking will be available off Hill Street.
