(CNN) — Babies born by cesarean section are more likely to be obese as adults compared to babies born naturally.

That’s the conclusion of a new study published in the International Journal of Obesity.

Researchers studied more than 10,000 babies; more than 900 were born by C-section.

At first, the c-section babies had lower birth weights, but by 11 years old, they were almost twice as likely to be overweight or obese compared to children born in vaginal deliveries.

The study’s lead researcher with New York University believes that babies born by c-section are not exposed to an important bacteria during birth.
