School Record Eleven Hogs Taken In MLB Draft
Arkansas’ roster continued to be picked over in the Major League Baseball draft this weekend.
Right handed pitcher Barrett Astin was taken with the 90th pick by the Milwaukee Brewers. Astin was just 4-4 for Arkansas in 2013 but had a 1.79 ERA and did not get much run support from his offense all season long. Astin struck out 74 while walking 20 in 90 2/3 innings. The Forrest City native is a junior and has the option to return to the Razorbacks for his senior season.
Dominic Ficociello was taken by the Detroit Tigers at pick No. 366. The Tigers also drafted Ficociello out of high school. The long, lanky infielder hit .247 for Arkansas as a junior with 17 RBI and 10 extra base hits but was trouble by injuries to start the season. Ficociello missed 15 games in 2013 but like Astin, has the ability to return for his senior season.
Trent Daniel was drafted by the Colorado Rockies with pick No. 499. The fifth year senior had a 2.55 ERA in 22 appearances out of the Arkansas bullpen. Daniel threw just 24 2/3 innings in 2013 and struck out 24 while he walked 11.
Van Buren native Brandon Moore was selected by the Brewers with pick No. 512. Moore has become the long relief specialist for the Razorbacks over the past two seasons. Moore had a 2.68 ERA in 47 innings of work while striking out 30 in his 25 appearances out of the bullpen.
Randall Fant was drafted in the 29th round by the Houston Astros after going 6-1 in his senior season. Fant had a 2.03 ERA in 66 2/3 innings while striking out 52 and walking just 19.
Eric Fisher has picked by the Miami Marlins in the 30th round, No. 892 overall. Fisher hit .238 for the Razorbacks in 46 games while driving in 13 runs.
Matt Vinson was picked up by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 37th round, No. 1,110 overall. The Alma native hit .286 for Arkansas in 2013 while driving in 24 runs and scored 37 times.
Senior Jacob Morris was drafted by the Chicago White Sox with pick No. 723 in the 24th round. Morris hit .160 in 41 games for Akransas while driving in 14 runs.
Tyler Wright was selected by the Mariners with pick No. 777. Wright had a 0.00 ERA for Arkansas in 20 1/3 innings while picking up 19 strikeouts while walking 11. Wright started the final game of the season for the Razorbacks but got a no decision in the 4-3 loss to Kansas State.
