Police said a Fort Smith woman was killed in a two-car accident Sunday afternoon.

Irma Lee Osborne, 79, was pronounced dead at Sparks Medical Center, police said. Osborne was driving a silver Toyota Corolla when police said she pulled out of a convenience store on the 6200 block of Highway 271 South at approximately 12:41 p.m.

The Corolla was struck broadside on the driver’s side by a GMC Canyon pickup that was unable to stop in time, police said. The pickup’s driver, 40-year-old Debbie Ellis, did not have any reported injuries.

Emergency personnel had to use the Jaws of Life to remove Osborne from her vehicle. Police said she was revived briefly by medics on the scene but she later died at the hospital.

The accident shut down traffic while police investigated. Police said there were skid marks from where the pickup’s driver tried to brake to avoid the collision.
