Fort Smith Police responded to a rollover accident at Buff Avenue and South S Street around noon Thursday (June 20).

At least three children, ages 7, 10, and 11, who were riding in the van were taken to the hospital. The boys had minor hip and shoulder injuries, according to police.

Police say a 17-year-old was driving a Durango west on South S Street when she collided with the van driven by 61-year-old Kenneth Fox going north on Bluff. The van hit a nearby parked car.

"The van actually rolled because of the impact on to a parked car at the intersection,” said Sgt. Daniel Grubbs.

The teen had a restricted driver's license and was citing for running a stop sign and not having a licensed adult in the vehicle. The Durango sustained heavy damage to the front of the vehicle.

Those who saw the accident say the teen driver was going well over the posted 35 miles per hour speed limit.

"She had come at least 50 miles an hour down the road,” said Gabriella Denza. “I don’t know if it was faster than that and when she hit him, his van flipped up in the air. I seen it flip up and I didn't know what to do, I just liked stopped where I was at."

Those in the neighborhood say this isn't the first time a serious accident has occurred in their area.

“We have a lot of problems at this intersection and this is not the first time they run this stop sign and they will do speeds up to fifty miles an hour," said Melinda Hay, another eyewitness.

The community says they feel more signs and officers on patrol are needed.
