Crowds Get Loud at 17th Hole

Golf is a quiet sport, but there’s one hole on the course known as the “loudest hole.”

Golf fans turned out to enjoy the first day of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G Friday (June 21).

Golf is a quiet sport, but there’s one hole on the course known as the “loudest hole.” Fans cheer and the pros get involved with the crowd at the 17th hole at the Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers.

Once players finish the hole, they throw balls, shirts or whatever they can into the crowd of spectators.

LPGA golfer Jennifer Johnson loves the idea of getting involved with her fans while she is playing.

“I think it’s a great idea,” she said. “Probably take a couple of years for it grow into the loudest hole but I think anything like that is great for the tour.”

The Malibu Party Deck, the Walmart tent and ballpark fan pavilion surround the green to create a stadium feel.

“We got the idea from a hole in Phoenix on the men’s tour where it’s a par 3 and kind of all the rules of typical golf go out the window,” said Jay Allen, tournament director. “People ‘boo’ bad shots, cheer, chant and throw things and all that kind of stuff."

The tournament continues Saturday where organizers expect even a bigger crowd, which means an even louder 17th hole.
