The Fayetteville Planning Commission voted 5-1 Monday (June 24) to extend Frickin' Chicken's mobile food vendor's permit at least nine more months. Its permit would have expired on July 4.
The food truck is located on North College Avenue in Fayetteville right next to Shave the Planet, which saw itself in a similar battle with Maggie Moo's in 2012. As part of the approval, Frickin' Chicken must provide bicycle racks, restrooms and a shaded area for its customers.
During the planning commission's meeting, the city's senior planner Andrew Garner recommended denying the permit extension. There was also public comment available and Frickin' Chicken owner Clayton Scott received support.
"Just goes to show the world that corporate companies cannot bully little guys like me that are just trying to get a business started," Scott said. "They can't bully us around. I'm not against KFC, I've eaten their chicken all of my life."
"Support always helps and what people said was straight from the heart," Scott said.
KFC's Joseph Morrow sent an opposition letter stating the company wasn't against the small business owner.
The letter states, "there would be a conflict-- a profound conflict of interest to our success and to the job security we provide to our employees."
At the end of the vote, the majority of the planning commission went against Andrew Garner's recommendation to deny the extension.
"They were within half a block away another couple of chicken restaurants so the way the code is written it's not intended for that to occur in staff's opinion," Garner said.
