A captain with the Fort Smith Fire Department was honored Monday (July 1) for rescuing a child earlier in the year.

Capt. Joey Sport received the Medal of Valor. He rescued a child who fell down a church ventilation shaft back in March.

Chief Mike Richards says this is a rare honor given to firefighters who risk their lives to save another.

In addition to the medal presentation, three firefighters were also promoted at the ceremony.
