A suspect is in custody following a stabbing in Sebastian County on Wednesday night, according to Greenwood police.

Emergency crews responded to a gas station in Jenny Lind, just outside of Greenwood, shortly after 5 p.m. to transport the stabbing victim to Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith. The stabbing did not happen at the gas station, police said.

The suspect had allegedly run away, but later at a Fort Smith liquor store, police arrested Paul Robert Buikema, of the Jenny Lind area. Police said the stabbing occurred at a home near Hendrix Road near Greenwood and that Buikema fled the home after the stabbing. Buikema faces a felony charge of first-degree battery.

A female friend of the victim put the victim in her car and stopped at the gas station on the way to the hospital to call 911, according to the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office. The victim sustained lacerations to the throat. He is undergoing surgery and is expected to recover, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sebastian County Sheriff's Office is investigating the stabbing. Deputies examined a car that has blood on the inside of a back door at the gas station.
