The Log Cabin Democrat and other media are reporting that that Hewlett-Packard is laying off 500 people at its service center in Conway.

The Conway newspaper cited an HP spokeswoman, Sarah Pompei, along with local legislators Sen. Jason Rapert and State Rep. David Meeks in its report.

“HP Media Relations Officer Sarah Pompei said the move will happen immediately, although some positions will remain for the next few months,” the newspaper said.

Brad Lacy, president of the Conway Regional Chamber of Commerce, told Arkansas Business the layoffs were unexpected.

“We were a little surprised,” he said.

Lacy said the chamber estimated HP to have employed around 1,400 before the layoffs. Now he said he’ll be working with the company to try to find new employment for the workers. Click here to read the full update from ArkansasBusiness.com.
