Democrat Nate Steel declared Wednesday (July 10) he is running for attorney general in the 2014 election.
“I’ll work with law enforcement to crack down on criminals,” Steel says in a news release issued after he announced his candidacy at the Howard County Courthouse. “I’ll stand up to those who would prey on our children, our seniors and on Arkansas consumers. I’ve never been one to back down from a fight.”
Republicans Leslie Rutledge and David Sterling also have announced they are vying for the seat. Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, a Democrat, is prohibited by term limits from seeking re-election.
The primary election is being held in May, with the winners from each party advancing to the November general election.
Steel, a lawyer and third-term state representative from Nashville, Ark., joined the family law practice and became a prosecutor in Howard County instead of seeking more money elsewhere as a “tall-building lawyer,” according to the news release.
“Growing up in the small town of Nashville, I learned the values of hard work, self-reliance and right and wrong,” he says in the release. “I learned to never sit on the sidelines. If there is a problem, be part of the solution.”
