Noodling is a common fishing practice in the south. An Atoka County, Okla., man is having second thoughts about doing it again after he was bitten by a 3-foot Cottonmouth snake.

Destry Mitchell, 20, says he was enjoying a day in the sun, noodling with friends behind a cove on McGee Creek Lake.

“There was a rock sticking up out of the middle of the water, so I put my hand on it to move around it,” he said. “And there was a snake, I guess, right behind the rock and, I guess, he saw my finger and he looked at that finger and just latched onto it.”

After pulling the snake off, Mitchell alerted his friends and drove to the hospital. Thanks to 14 vials of anti-venom, Mitchell is alive and well with his limbs intact.

Doctors told him the bite could have been deadly.

After his the experience, Mitchell says he’s not sure if he will ever noodle again.

“Noodling is a very, very dangerous sport,” he said. “When you go in there and check your holes, make sure your rocks are stable. You go under, make sure your surroundings are fine. Make sure there’s no snakes on rocks.”
