July 16th marks the untimely and tragic death of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Junior.

The socialite, lawyer, magazine editor, and son of assassinated president John F. Kennedy was killed along with his wife, Carolyn Bessett-Kennedy and her older sister Lauren Bessette in a plane crash. Kennedy was piloting the single-engine plane when it crashed into Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

The man once voted “Sexiest Man Alive” by People Magazine is also well known for the heartbreaking picture of him as a three year old–on his birthday–saluting his father’s casket. At his own funeral, attended by 300 invited guests, including President Bill Clinton, was eulogized as being part of a legacy and a legend.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board deemed the plane crash to be caused by an inexperienced pilot who became disoriented in dark conditions, and lost control of the plan.

JKF Jr. was 39 years old.
