A Fort Smith home was badly damaged by a fire Sunday afternoon.

Mark Talley, a battalion chief with the Fort Smith Fire Department, said firefighters responded to a report of a fire on the 2100 block of Garner Lane at approximately 1:08 p.m. The homeowner told firefighters that he was asleep when he heard glass break and, when he looked up, he saw a large orange glow on the back deck.

Talley said the fire appears to have started on the lower of two back decks. The homeowner was able to get out of the house uninjured, and firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes, Talley said.

It took firefighters another hour to put out the remaining hot spots. Sixteen firefighters originally responded to the fire, but Talley said he requested four additional firefighters since it was a hot day and he didn't want to overexert his crew.

The house sustained a great deal of damage and was close to a total loss, Talley said. The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire but it appears to be accidental, Talley said.
