A Fort Smith woman was killed early Saturday morning (July 20) after the Chevrolet Malibu she was driving hit a utility pole at the intersection of Kelley Highway and North 27th.
Maria Lopez, 41, was taken to a local hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries, according to Fort Smith police.
The accident occurred around 5:41 a.m., Fort Smith police believe Lopez failed to negotiate a curve in a road and struck the utility pole at the northwest corner of the intersection. It appears Lopez was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, the accident report states.
Police say Lopez was traveling alone.
