A Benton County deputy underwent surgery Friday, a day after breaking his arm while chasing a suspect in Bentonville, according to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Walter Fry was admitted into a local hospital Thursday night after a traffic stop turned into a foot chase.
The deputy pulled over a black Toyota passenger car near the intersection of Highway 102 and Southwest A Street. He started questioning the passenger, Daniel Castro, when the passenger allegedly started acting strange. Castro suddenly started running from the deputy, according to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
Fry took chase, but tripped and suffered a broken arm and a mild injury to the face and head area, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Castro fled the scene, but was later apprehended, along with the driver of the car.
Because of the deputy’s injury, Castro faces felony charges of fleeing on foot with serious physical injury and possession of a counterfeit controlled substance. Castro may have been running because he was wanted on a $500,000 failure to appear warrant out of California, stemming from a case where he faces a felony charge of driving under the influence with serious injury, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
