The Benton County administrator accused of bilking the public out of county money to upgrade his truck and house was released from jail Wednesday. He was also given paperwork by the county to resign his position.

Scott Stober was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony theft of property. He was released the next day on $2,500 bond, according to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

Stober is accused of using about $3,000 in county money on his personal pickup truck and house, according to a probable cause affidavit from the Benton County Prosecutor’s Office. The affidavit states Stober spent $1,487 to rebuild the rear differential on his truck and $858 on new tires from Moore’s Tire in Springdale.

The county public services administrator and head of the county road department is also suspected of spending $843 on wood to build a deck on his home, according to the probable cause affidavit. Stober even enlisted the help of Benton County Road Department employees to pick up some of the materials for his vehicle and his home in Bella Vista, the affidavit states.

County officials said Stober has not been fired, but has been given the chance to resign. A second county employee has been suspended with pay in connection with the criminal investigation.

During an interview with investigators, Stober allegedly admitted to using county money on the personal purchases. He also said he spent money on a toolbox, as well as a toy box for his children.
