Decatur caught the football landscape by surprise in 2012 by winning six games and reaching the 2A playoffs.
But that doesn’t mean the Bulldogs are satisfied.
“It just gives us more confidence that we can do it again,” junior Allen Castaneda said. Just come back even stronger than before.”
“We want to make it to the playoffs,” junior Maril Urquidi said. “We want to have a better record this year and go further in the playoffs because we don’t want to just go the first game and then be out.”
Last year’s win total equaled the number of the wins the school had over the previous six seasons.
“We’d like to build off of that,” coach Shane Holland said. “We’d like to not be a one and done team. We were there last year and it had been a long time but we’d like to go back this year. We need to start, get things going right and see where we go.”
Victor Urquidi rushed for more than 1,200 from his quarterback position and added just less than 800 yards passing last year but will miss the entire season due to shoulder surgery. Maril Urquidi averaged 17.7 yards per catch last season.
LIke is the case most seasons, Decatur is struggling in the numbers department. Holland said he expects fewer than 25 players this season.
“It’s just going to be pushing ourselves,” Castaneda said. “People that are committed to going out and playing hard. Just giving it all they got.”
Decatur takes Subiaco Academy in the season opener on Sept. 6.
