Lamar’s football program struggled to put a consistent winner on the field from 1987 until just a few years ago. But that all changed in 2008.
The Warriors have won 38 games over the past five seasons and second year coach Josh Jones has his eyes set on a bigger prize.
“It all starts with the conference,” Jones said. “Get a high seed in the conference and then get a good draw in the playoffs and anything can happen at that point.”
Lamar’s only losses against 3A opponents came against the two teams that finished above them in the 3A-4 (Charleston, Paris) and the eventual state champion Harding Academy in the second round of the playoffs. The Warriors have nine starters back as the team is starting to build on the new tradition.
“Just take what those seniors left and try to build our leadership off that and hopefully set the right examples so everybody else works as hard as you,” senior Caleb Robinson said.
Lamar won eight games last season, the most since winning 10 in 2009, but the Warriors spent the offseason building toward this year.
“We come together and we are all a brotherhood now. Just working together, working hard in the locker room and working hard in the fieldhouse,” senior Hunter Cowell said.
“Up there in the weight room and out here just communicate better and just work harder at everything you do,” senior Ryan Jones said.
Lamar kicks off the 2013 season on Sept. 6 hosting Gravette.
