Wins have been tough to come by for Gentry in recent history but the return of 17 starters have the expectations high for the Pioneers.
“Our goals are high,” Gentry coach Brian Little said. “We talked to the kids last week about the fact we’ve got to believe. If you don’t go into anything believing that you can do it then there’s really no reason to go after it. Why set your goals low?”
Gentry has won just three games over the past two seasons but a belief in the cause is the force driving this team.
“The coaches spent a lot of time with the seniors,” senior Tucker Willett said. “They took us on a retreat and invested a lot of their time on us to make us all believe. Make us all become a family. Become closer.”
“It’s going to take everyone knowing the system and executing their jobs and their positions and believing in the other people that they are going to do their jobs as your do yours,” senior Alec Nelson said.
The Pioneers were stuck in one of the toughest conferences in 4A last season but those experiences should help this senior laden team.
“We’ve just got to work hard, condition a lot because we don’t have a lot of numbers,” senior quarterback Jarod Cousins said. “I think if we just work hard and get conditioned we’ll do good.”
Gentry kicks off the season with three straight home games starting with West Fork on Sept. 6.
