Eddie Ray picked up his first ever conference title last season but Hackett’s season ended far earlier than the Hornets were hoping.
The Hornets dropped an 18-13 decision to Poyen in the opening round of the 2A playoffs after going 8-0 in the 2A-4. That loss has provided plenty of motivation for the 2013 season.
“That was a huge disappointment for us,” Ray said. “We expected to be better than that in the playoffs, should have been better than that and we look to try and do better than that this year.”
“We went out last season, a big disappointment and we weren`t actually ready,” senior quarterback William Thomas said. “Now we know not to take anyone lightly.”
Thomas was named all-state last season after throwing for more than 2,000 yards and 26 touchdowns while scoring six more times on the ground.
Road games at Hector in week two and at Mountainburg in week seven could be the two road blocks between the Hornets and a repeat conference title.
“We expect to win conference again,” Ray said. “We know it`s an uphill battle every year with some of the good teams we play but we expect to either win it or be in the hunt for it.”
“We`re trying to take conference champs again and we want to go deep in the playoffs but have to take it one game at a time,” Thomas said.
Hackett kicks off the 2013 season on Sept. 6 at England.
