Just two years ago, the Magazine Rattlers were one of the most feared 2A teams in the state. Now they are faced with the task of rebuilding toward that point.
The Rattlers won 38 games in a three year stretch but were faced with a depleted roster and coaching staff last season. Now Doug Powell enters his second season as head coach and looks to turn things around after missing the playoffs last year.
“Just unbelievable,” Powell said. “Had a great group of guys, they just found a way to win. They had skills to do that with and really put us on a different level.”
Magazine went 4-4 in the 2A-4 last season but missed the playoffs for the first time since 2005 but 14 starters return.
“Well I’ve been in the field house ever chance I got,” said senior tackle Alex Elkins, “I lift and I try to get other kids to lift. I really practice hard and try to set a good example.”
“Everyone is a whole lot stronger and we are all leaders,” said senior guard Layton Robinson, “We all get along really well, a lot better than last year.”
Billy Yang returns to anchor the defense after leading the team with 70 tackles and being selected to the all conference team last season.
