There have been plenty of peaks and valleys in recent history for the Lavaca Golden Arrows.

Mark Headley led Lavaca to the state semifinals as recently as the 2008 season but the past three years haven’t been as successful.

Lavaca has won just six games over the past three years but changing the attitude has been the first step for the program.

“It’s going to take a mental change, definitely for the whole team,” senior linebacker Andrew Majzner said. “We just have to overall switch from where we were to what we need to be. We’ve definitely got the skill. We just really need to work at it and change the mentality. And that’s been pretty good so far.”

“We’ve got to change our mentality on the field. We’ve got to get a more aggressive, more tough,” senior fullback/linebacker Cody Graves said. “Everyone is lacking that aggressiveness you’ve got to have when you’re playing football.”

“I feel like our mentality has got to get a whole lot better,” senior running back Anthony Todaro said. “We’ve got to get more aggressive and learn how to finish ball games and just get tougher on the field. Be able to push through it.”

Todaro led Lavaca with more than 700 yards rushing last season while Graves is a strong, bruising option at fullback. Junior Hayden Headley returns at quarterback after producing 11 touchdowns last season.

Graves will also anchor the defense at middle linebacker and was selected to the all conference team in 2012 after racking up 80 tackles.

“We’ve got to work together,” Graves said. “That was something we didn’t do very well last year. Someone would get down and that would bring the whole team down so unity is a big key to change.”

Lavaca will be tested early as they face 4A power Prairie Grove on Sept. 6 in the season opener.
