Roland reached the second round of the playoffs in 2012 for the first time in nearly half a century. And the Rangers return 10 starters on the offensive side of the football.
Four year starter at quarterback Brooks Robertson is gone but every other player returns led by a stout offensive line and running back Laython Carter.
“We just got to keep working hard in practice and maybe we’ll get there,” Carter said.
Jeff Streun knows that breaking in a new quarterback will be tough but the surrounding pieces should make the transition a little easier.
“Having an offensive line back is a big thing for us,” Streun said. “They’ve got some room for improvement right there but the experience and leadership that they bring is going to bring us a long way in helping our young quarterback adapt to the game.”
Austin Cantrell will be a threat on both sides of the football whether it’s at tight end or at defensive end. Cantrell has already broken the school’s sack record and has two years left with the Rangers.
“Effort and speed,” Cantrell said. “I’m a lot faster than a lot of those other lineman so speed is my biggest thing I think.”
“Austin Cantrell is a tremendous player for us on both sides of the football,” Cantrell said. “He makes a lot of plays for us both sides.”
Roland kicks off the 2013 season against rival Muldrow on Thursday, Sept. 5.
