The 2013 was a bit of an adjustment for Waldron coach Shane Davis. The previous fall Davis was hoisting a 2A state championship as the coach at Strong.
Last fall Davis had to endure an 0-10 year but the transition has begun for the Bulldogs.
“This year commitment and attitude have been off the charts,” Davis said. “Nobody is missing. Everything has been positive. That’s probably been the biggest change between year one and year two, just the attitude of the kids. They’ve bought in.”
Jakob Johnston will anchor both offensive and defensive lines and said he’s started to see the progression of the football team.
“Last year we had different attitudes,” Johnston said. “If somebody made a mistake then they weren’t going to put it on themselves. They were going to try to blame it on someone else but we have overall changed that this summer. We’re contributing more and holding ourselves responsible.”
Garren Carpenter will be the focal point of the offense at running back and he said it will be the simple things that help start the turnaround.
“Just doing what we’re supposed to do, making the right decisions in plays and just going hard the entire game,” Carpenter said.
Waldron kicks off the season with three straight opponents from the 3A-4, starting with rival Mansfield on Sept. 6
