Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials said a 24-year-old man was killed in a single-car accident early Sunday morning (Aug. 17) just north of Sallisaw.

Jimmy Don Cheater, of Marble City, was pronounced dead at the scene on State Highway 17 less than a mile south of Brushy Lake Park. A passenger in the car, Trenton Thirsty of Sallisaw, was injured and taken to Sparks Hospital and is listed in stable condition, officials said.

The police report on the accident said Cheater was driving a 2006 Pontiac GTO south on Highway 17 at approximately 5:21 a.m. when the car left the road on a curve and hit a culvert and a tree. Officials said the car rolled over and Cheater was ejected about 80 feet from the vehicle.

Police officials believe the cause of the accident was Cheater driving at an unsafe speed, and a trooper reported the odor of alcohol on Cheater at the scene.
