Two people have died after a car crash in Sequoyah County.

Two people have died after a car crash in Sequoyah County.

Earnest Poindexter, 59, of Sallisaw crashed Saturday around 7 p.m. while driving a 2002 GMC Yukon on I-40, near Sallisaw.

OHP said Poindexter was traveling westbound on I-40 when, for an unknown reason, he departed the roadway to the right.  Investigators say he attempted to correct himself and travel back across the roadway and slid off the roadway to the left, rolling over twice before hitting a traffic sign and coming to rest on all four wheels.

Two passengers were ejected from the car during the crash.

Ira Poindexter, 55, and Betty Jean Poindexter, 58, were both pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.  Oklahoma Highway Patrol said neither were wearing seatbelts.

Two other passengers, Brooklyn Poindexter, 19, and Susan Poindexter, 50, were both transported to Fort Smith hospitals, along with the driver, Earnest.  All three were treated and released.

The crash is still under investigation by Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
