Clarksville first season in class 5A didn’t go as well as they were hoping.
The Panthers went 1-9 but the return of 13 starters and a strong senior class has optimism high for coach Michael Bannings’ team.
“As you move up in classification, a lot of things change and our young men have to get adapted to that,” Banning said. “The depth problems we had last year in 5A and just new competition.”
“You start working harder than you did before,” senior quarterback Brandon Lovell said. “We had a lot of problems last year. We just couldn’t put it all together. I think the seniors this year, they want to win. They want to really win and I think it’s going to turn out pretty good for us.”
Lovell started three games at quarterback last season before moving to running back to finish the season.
“It’s going to take the whole team putting it all together,” Lovell said. “Do your job both sides of the ball. Whatever you have to do on the team, you get it done. You do it right.”
Clarksville kicks off the season on Sept. 6 against Charleston.
“I think our seniors are really going to have to play,” Banning said. “We’re really a senior oriented team and we’re dominated on both sides of the ball by senior play and those guys are going to have to play both ways. For us to be successful they are going to have to lead this team and make plays on the field.”
