The last time Sallisaw had a quarterback not named Oberste, Black Diamond head coach Craig Benson was still coaching the Stilwell Indians.
After a run of talented quarterbacks, Benson will now turn to a pair of talented senior running backs to carry the load.
“I like the direction we’re headed, the approach they’ve taken. We’re off to a good start,” Benson said. “We have Jadon Davenport. We have Cale Wilson. Two 200 pound running backs so that will take a load off of his mind and not put him in a situation where he has to make all the plays.”
Sallisaw will start sophomore Quint Scofus at quarterback but he will lean on both Davenport and Wilson, who both weigh in at more than 200 pounds.
“Working hard, going over the basics,” Davenport said. “Getting the easy stuff out of the way so that stuff is not an issue on Friday nights.”
“Just to play as one,” Wilson said. “Not have many errors and complete our percentages when we get out there on the field.”
Sallisaw kicks off the 2013 season with a pair of road games starting at Greenwood on Sept. 6
