According to the Farmer’s Almanac, this winter will be colder than normal with more moisture across much of the south. They’re also forecasting a major snow storm to hit the Northeast on February 2nd which is the day of the Super Bowl (and, perhaps coincidentally, it’s also Ground Hog day). The Super Bowl is set to be played outdoors this year.

The Almanac does not reveal the methods used to formulate their long-range forecasts which makes their predictions not scientifically credible. Last year, the forecast was for colder than normal winter with lots of snow in Arkansas. The winter was warmer than normal up until the end when our area had the first measurable May snowfall.

Climate meteorologists use things such as teleconnections between the ocean and land to forecast long-range trends such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, or North Atlantic Oscillation; it is too soon and there is no clear signal indicating anything significant this far out.

Of course, this could all be an insanely creative (and effective) attempt at selling their publication; but the way our weather has been around here lately… who knows?
