The Oklahoma state superintendent is hoping a $2,000 raise for educators will help ease the Sooner state’s teacher shortage.

Janet Barresi convened the first meeting of the Teacher Shortage Task Force Monday morning (Aug. 26) in Oklahoma City.

The panel will study current workforce shortage issues across the state, as well as ways to recruit and retain the best teachers for Oklahoma schools.

Barresi says a $2,000 raise would make Oklahoma’s salaries for teachers more competitive with surrounding states like Arkansas, Missouri and Texas.

The extra money could be funded by tapping into surplus funds and reducing schools’ administrative overhead, according to Barresi.

The group will meet up three other times before the end of the year.
